OCR: When the rains fall, the desert landscape changes, and what was previously a parched, barren wasteland may be covered with masses of wildflowers. Flowers are particularly common along roadsides, because the run-off water from roads provides extra moisture. The desert soil is also disturbed by road construction, creating an uneven surface in which wind-blown seeds lodge.
